The Australian opal mining regions are scattered throughout the western regions of Qld, NSW & SA namely located in hot, dry & sometimes moonlike landscapes where temperatures can get very hot in the summer months. A lot of our younger generation are unaware that Opals are our most treasured national gemstone having being officially declared so in Federal Parliament in 1993. They have a very fascinating and mysterious history dating way back to the days of the Roman Empire where many believed they brought their carriers good fortune, possessed magical properties as well as being a very rare beautiful gemstone. The mining of opal in this country also has a very colourful & rich history which dates back to 1868 when the first precious opal was discovered at Listowel Downs Station south of Blackall in Western Queensland.
